In honor of the release of Cold as Snow this month, I’m letting the characters take over the blog. Today’s post comes from Lark, owner of the mine outside of Belville–where someone has just been murdered . . . Enjoy! –Elle

The true alchemists do not change lead into gold;

they change the world into words.

William h. Gass

I’m not actually that good with words–at least, I wouldn’t think so. Taking over blogs and talking about yourself seems more like something William would do. But when I told him that, he told me that I had to go first because I am the narrator, after all. Not really sure how that happened, but here we are.

So I figured I’d start with a quote. Because we’re all building on the things we’ve been taught, right? I know I am–my potions and experiments are all things I learned from my alchemical teachers. Well, except the things I made up, of course. But that’s thing about running a shop–it makes you resourceful.

And that’s the thing about alchemy–making the world into something understandable, I mean. That’s why I chose that quote. I don’t think I can change the world into words, exactly. But the idea is the same: to make it understandable. To solve–or at least capture–some of its mysteries.

That sort of thing is what drew me to alchemy. It’s probably also why Officer Thorn insists I’m such a good “assistant.” But that’s not what got me mixed up in the Beauty and the Beast business with the haunted castle. I got involved with that mostly because I was trying to help Gloria, my neighbor, and Luca, the bookseller. Really, it’s Luca’s story more than anyone else’s.

Maybe next week, I’ll get him to do the takeover and explain all about it. 😉

That’s it from Taiwo! I suppose now I’m on the hook for sharing a slime monster story with newsletter subscribers (thanks, Taiwo). And in the meantime, Mermaid for Danger is already up for preorder on some sites! You can find it at this link: https://books2read.com/mermaid-for-danger
