In honor of the release of Cold as Snow this month, I’m letting the characters take over the blog. Today’s post comes from Lark, owner of the mine outside of Belville–where someone has just been murdered . . . Enjoy! –Elle
Let me begin by saying that I’m aware of everything Red has told you about me. After all, I didn’t build up my business from nothing to regional dominance of the mining trade by being unaware.
I’m also aware that Officer Thorn has her suspicions about me. Why, the stubborn officer wonders, would I need to dominate local mining business when my true goal is delivering materials to coastal wheelchair makers? The answer is quite simple. I find the most expedient way to do something is to be the best at it. And besides, who said I couldn’t support my charity and be a successful businesswoman?
I’m amused by this opportunity to express myself. But you must understand, there is very little I can say. It is not becoming for a person with my position of power to pass wanton judgments. For example, you might be wondering how I feel about my choice to hire Snow and her fellow teammates at my mine. And I would tell you that’s none of your business.
However, of course I can say that I am grieved by the murder. My mine, like all of my businesses, is meant to be a place where all are welcome to work. It is not meant to be a place of fear, for dwarves or anyone else. But if I’ve learned one thing in business, it’s that people are fickle and will often surprise you.
I will also say that Snow–with the help of Red and her friends–surprised me very much.
