Combining genres can be a risk–but it can also earn you devoted fans. Learn from one indie author’s experience and discuss the how, when, and why of genre blending in today’s market.

Well, that’s what my workshop proposal said, at least. 😉 I’m thrilled to say my idea was accepted, and I’ll be presenting at the Liberty States Fiction Writers’ Conference in April. If you’re a writer or author in the New Jersey area, check it out! (There’s still time to register!)

If you’re interested in my workshop specifically, I’ve included the expanded summary for it below. This week I’m putting the final touches on the writing exercise and slides, so my brain is full of cross-genre thoughts, haha. But the conference also includes some really intriguing and useful workshops on “BookTok,” Facebook Ads, writing conflict, police procedures, and more. Plus, after a full morning of presentations, there’s an afternoon book fair and games in the evening. 😀

This is my first time going to this particular conference, and I’m really looking forward to it. If you happen to be there–whether for presentations or just for the book fair–be sure to look me up!

Blending Genres: How and Why to Color Outside the Lines

Writing cross–genre fiction can create a niche and find dedicated fans, or it can simply make two groups of readers frustrated and disappointed. With such high stakes, why bother writing it at all? Because sometimes it’s in the space between genres that we find stories that feel fresh, honest, and revelatory.

Drawing upon one indie author’s experience with writing, releasing, and marketing two multi-genre series, this workshop aims to open up a constructive conversation about blending genres. I’ll share the reasoning behind my series and my tips for how, when, and why to blur genre lines–and what to keep in mind while you do so. We’ll get hands-on with a writing exercise and discuss what works and what doesn’t. Finally, we’ll wrap up the hour with helpful takeaways from writing outside your comfort zone. Blending genres doesn’t have to be difficult or scary: in fact, no matter what you write, it can deepen the meaning in your work.
